Design Principles | Task 1: Exploration
Final Work
The reimagining of Hokusai's "Great Wave" introduces moonlight and lantern as a central element to create a new narrative: Human Vitality, while preserving the original's dynamic artwork. This decision adds a temporal dimension to the piece, suggesting a nighttime scene that emphasizes nature's mysterious and relentless silence qualities. The moonlight creates highlights across the wave's surface, enhancing the existing movement patterns while adding atmospheric depth.
The interplay between natural light sources creates a huge contrast for the story that emphasizes the struggle between human and nature's raw power. This visual tension is further substantial by the warm glow of the lantern against the cool moonlit waves, symbolizing hope and human presence amid overwhelming forces. The balanced lantern elements serve to guide the viewer's eye through the composition while maintaining the piece's dramatic intensity.
The design maintains the original's core principles of movement and balance, which is the golden ratio, but introduces new layers of visual interest through careful manipulation of the moon and lantern. The moonlight streaming through the wave's crest creates additional diagonal lines that complement the existing flow patterns, while selective lantern elements enhance the texture and depth of the composition.
The design serves to demonstrate how traditional artwork can be respectfully reinterpreted while introducing new elements that enhance its dramatic impact and visual narrative.

Final Reflection
I have gotten an understanding of fundamental design principles and their practical applications. The module has enhanced my ability to analyze artworks critically and apply design theories and principles effectively. Learning about golden ratio, composition and movement elements, and visual hierarchy has transformed how I approach design challenges.
The hands-on experience of analyzing masterpieces like "The Great Wave" was particularly engaging. I enjoyed studying how different design principles interact to create powerful visual impacts. The sketches in proposing improvements to existing works helped me develop my creative thinking skills.
Initially, I found it challenging to articulate visual analysis in writing. Converting visual observations into clear, technical descriptions required specific vocabulary. However, this challenge ultimately improved my design vocabulary and analytical skills.
This module has revealed my natural inclination toward detail-oriented analysis of the existing artwork and creative problem-solving. I've discovered my ability to see design principles not just as individual components but as interconnected parts of a larger narrative.
Through this module, I've grown from being a design observer to becoming a more informed and analytical design practitioner. This transformation has equipped me with valuable skills for my future in the design field.
