Task 1: Exploration
Design Principles / Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Creative Media / Taylors University

Instructions

Fig. 1.1 Module Information Booklit - Design Principles

Explore design principles from the module and document observations of design works in your blog.

Task 1 Blog Post Requirements:

  1. Include this MIB and describe these design principles with original examples (no reuse from lectures). Credit all sources. Plagiarism will result in module failure. Follow GenAI usage guidelines. • Gestalt theory • Contrast • Emphasis • Balance • Repetition • Movement • Harmony & Unity • Symbol • Word and Image
  2. Choose and analyze an art/design work:
  • Upload image (JPEG, min. A4, 300dpi)
  • Include credit line (title, artist, year, size, medium, source)
  • Write 150-200 words on why you chose it
  • Describe observed design principles
  • Include lecturer feedback

Research

After getting the instruction from Ms. Jinchi about task 1 in the week 1 lecture, I started the research to find the artwork and learned what design principles in art or design are and how these principles are expressed in works.

I found one webpage that explains the design principle, especially movement. On the site, there's the famous Japanese artwork by Katsushika Hokusai.

Also, the author mentioned that movement in design is defined as the technique artists use to guide viewers' eyes through a composition. It's created through:
  • The strategic use of lines, shapes, and forms in the image
  • Visual hierarchy and emphasis, which help direct the eye's path through the work

Task 1

Fig. 1.2 The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai

Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
Year: 1831
Dimensions: 24.6 cm × 36.5 cm (9.7 in × 14.4 in)
Source: Waller, L. (2023, August 8). The principles of design: movement. Inkling Creative. https://inklingcreative.ink/movement/

I chose "The Great Wave" by Hokusai because it masterfully demonstrates the fundamental principle of movement through its extraordinarily dynamic composition and deeply embodies traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.

What particularly captivates me about this masterpiece is its remarkable ability to simultaneously convey intense motion and serene stillness - a delicate balance that speaks to the dual nature of natural forces. The iconic wave's elaborate curling form, with its dramatic sweeping gestures and intricate details of the waves, creates an irresistible sense of motion that expertly guides the viewer's eye across the entire composition, while the carefully positioned small boats and the majestic Mount Fuji in the background work in harmony to provide both a sense of depth and a profound understanding of scale in the scene.

I am particularly drawn to the historical significance of this woodblock print, which not only serves as a stunning exemplar of Japanese artistic traditions but also brilliantly demonstrates how dynamic movement can be effectively captured and frozen within a static medium through the masterful implementation of flowing lines, meticulously crafted repeated patterns, and thoughtfully constructed diagonal compositions that draw the eye through the piece.

Observed Design Principles

Movement: The waves and curves create a powerful sense of motion throughout the composition.

Balance: The composition achieves asymmetrical balance.

Rhythm: The recurring wave patterns and foam elements create the same rhythm across the image.

Emphasis: The massive wave serves as the focal point, drawing immediate attention while framing the diminutive Mount Fuji.

Feedback
