Week 1

Fig.1 Contextual Research

In the early stages of the project, I worked with my group to finalize our teams and decide on an assignment theme. Since our focus was on Wyndham Hotels, I began by researching comparable hotels to gain a better understanding of the industry landscape.

Week 2 - Week 3

I conducted research on the strategies of hotels located near Fraser’s Hill—a setting similar to our focus area. I explored which marketing and branding approaches were effective and identified those that were less successful to inform our direction.

To gain deeper insight, we held a meeting with Wyndham Hotel staff. This helped me understand the hotel’s current situation, key challenges, preferred visual style, and target audience.

Week 4

Fig.2 Sample of Persona

Based on this information, I helped create three detailed personas representing different segments of the target demographic. These personas guided the development of a questionnaire, which we used to conduct interviews.

Once the interviews were completed, I participated in analyzing the collected responses. The analysis revealed that cultural tourism was a primary interest for many potential visitors. As a result, I contributed to shifting our design focus to appeal to this specific audience.

With this in mind, we narrowed our “How Might We” (HMW) questions down to three. I then brainstormed ideas aligned with both the target demographic and the core challenges identified earlier.

From there, I took part in developing the proposal slides and refining our selected concept, focusing on visual elements such as font choices, color schemes, logo design, and key visuals.

After finalizing the core design components, I contributed to developing concrete strategies for engaging customers, which included creating a detailed customer journey map.

Following this journey map, I worked on designing supporting visuals and mockups, while also continuing to build and polish our final presentation slides.

Reflective Writing

Throughout this module, I experienced significant growth in both collaborative and design thinking skills. One of the most valuable learning moments came during our meeting with Wyndham Hotel staff. Through this direct communication, I gained an in-depth understanding of the hotel’s current challenges, brand aspirations, and target audience. This made the project more grounded and realistic, and it emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in any design process.

Based on the findings, I helped develop three detailed personas representing key customer segments. This task helped me strengthen my ability to empathize with diverse user groups and translate data into practical tools for ideation. We then used these personas to design a questionnaire, which became the basis for interviews. Analyzing the responses allowed me to identify cultural tourism as a major point of interest among potential guests.

This realization shifted our direction significantly. I actively contributed to redefining our design focus toward cultural storytelling and immersive experiences, aligning our strategy with what the target demographic valued most. We then refined our “How Might We” questions to guide ideation in a focused yet open-ended way. I enjoyed brainstorming possible solutions, ensuring each idea addressed user needs while remaining visually cohesive and brand-relevant.

In the proposal development phase, I was involved in creating slides and refining visual elements like typography, color palette, logo, and key visuals. This allowed me to apply my design skills in a structured, client-oriented setting. I also worked on customer engagement strategies and co-developed a detailed customer journey map, which helped visualize how our audience would interact with our concept across different touchpoints.

Towards the end of the project, I contributed to creating visual mockups and refining our final presentation slides. This process helped me understand the importance of consistency in communication and the value of strong storytelling in a pitch setting.

Overall, this module taught me the value of research-driven design, collaboration, and user empathy. I developed a more strategic approach to creative thinking and realized how every design decision—whether visual or functional—should serve a purpose and resonate with the intended audience.
