The Oblong Box
Synopsis
The story follows the narrator's sea voyage from Charleston to New York on the packet-ship "Independence." Among the passengers is his old friend, the artist Cornelius Wyatt, who is traveling with his newlywed wife and two sisters. The narrator becomes intrigued by Wyatt's behavior and the presence of an oblong box that Wyatt keeps in his stateroom. Wyatt appears unusually secretive and morose, further fueling the narrator's curiosity.
As the ship sails, the narrator observes strange events, including Wyatt's wife sneaking into an extra stateroom at night and Wyatt prying open the mysterious box. The situation takes a dramatic turn when the ship encounters a violent storm near Cape Hatteras, leading to significant damage and eventual abandonment. During the chaos, it is revealed that the box contains the embalmed body of Wyatt’s deceased wife, who had died just before the voyage. To avoid the ship's passengers' superstitions about traveling with a corpse, Wyatt had arranged for her maid to impersonate her.
The story combines elements of mystery and suspense, exploring themes of love, loss, and the lengths to which one might go to honor a loved one’s memory.

3.1 Research
I chose the story "The Oblong Box" by Edgar Allan Poe for the final project. I started my research on Pinterest and found some references for the final project. They are mostly based on the Concept Art Style so I created my work following this style.
3.2 Sketch
After reading the entire story, I came up with the idea of using a packet ship to express it. This serves as the introduction to invite the audience into the story.

3.3 Process Work
My comic cover includes three layers: the background, a packet ship, and some ocean waves.
To create the background, I took five steps. I used various effects, especially the transparency effect. The hardest part was expressing darkness and moonlight.

The second layer was created using the pen tool. It was difficult to present the depth, but I learned that color styling is important through this process.

The challenging part of expressing waves, just like with the ship, was the color. It was relatively difficult because if you don't skillfully combine dark and light colors, the waves won't appear dynamic. Also, I added the wave effect to this.

3.4 Typography
I prepared three comic covers that have different fonts and compositions for the titles. I got some feedback from Mr. Hafiz, he chose Attempt#3 composition. I liked the font of #1, so I tried to make it again.

3.6 Sketch
Based on the research, I drew six scenes. These scenes illustrate the key moments of the story, capturing both the dramatic and subtle elements that drive the narrative forward. Each frame was carefully planned to ensure a seamless flow and to maintain the reader's engagement throughout the comic.

3.7 Process Work
I took some pictures of my friend as samples. This allows me to consider the details for the composition of this comic page.

Based on these samples, I created 18 elements for the comic page. I used the pen tool, some effects to add texture, and transparency as I learned from past lectures.

After combining all the elements, I added the dialogues. I wanted to make the composition of the dialogues beautiful, so I tried to arrange them in this pink zone.

Key elements include the balance between text and imagery, the use of white space to avoid clutter, and the strategic placement of elements to guide the viewer's eye. The color scheme are chosen to enhance readability and draw attention to important information. Overall, the design aims to provide a clear and concise introduction while maintaining visual interest.
