1. Biography about myself

INTRO

I am a Japanese student with a love for the arts, nature, and culture. My journey into design began early in my life, driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire to create. I have honed my skills across various creative fields, always seeking new ways to express my artistic vision.

PARAGRAPH 1

Growing up amidst the rich cultural tapestry of Japan, I was constantly surrounded by beauty and tradition, which deeply influenced my artistic sensibilities. My early years were spent sketching, painting, and experimenting with different mediums, each experience contributing to my evolving understanding of design. These days I could get a bunch of new knowledge in university for design to explore my artwork.

PARAGRAPH 2

I enjoy daydreaming, allowing my imagination to wander and inspire new creative projects.

SUMMARY

With a passion for arts, nature, and culture, influenced by both Japan's and Malaysia's rich culture. I have honed their skills through various mediums and university education, continually seeking new ways to express their artistic vision and drawing inspiration from daydreaming.

2. Statement about work

INTRO

I am planning to express a blend of cultures reminiscent of Japan and Malaysia. This unique fusion is further enriched by elements of fantasy, drawing inspiration from the traditions and my real-life experiences. Through my art, I strive to create a space where imagination and heritage coexist, offering viewers a glimpse into a world that is both familiar and fantastical.

PARAGRAPH 1

For Japanese elements, I am considering using food such as sushi and tonkatsu, traditional costumes, and nature. For Malaysian culture, I plan to incorporate the national flower, the Twin Towers, Malaysian food, and other aspects that are popular among young people in Malaysia.

PARAGRAPH 2

As an international student experiencing both Japanese and Malaysian cultures, I'd like to explore the possibility of these two distinct worlds coexisting harmoniously. This endeavor is not just an artistic challenge but a personal journey to express my identity. Being Japanese and living in Malaysia has given me a unique perspective, allowing me to appreciate the richness and diversity of both cultures.

SUMMARY

I plan to blend Japanese and Malaysian cultures with elements of fantasy in their art, using traditional foods, costumes, and iconic symbols from both cultures.

3. Research

I started my research on Pinterest and found some references for the final project. They are based on photo collage and double exposure.

4. Sketch

I will theme a mysterious place that contrasts and simultaneously exists in the same space, like a dream-like space and reality, between Japan and Malaysia. I created this sketch.

5. Process work

Mockups

Drawing inspiration from my experiences, I created a composition that captures the elements of Japan and Malaysia. I experimented with combining elements from my life in Malaysia and Japan, merging them into a cohesive and imaginative piece.

This is the original picture taken with my phone.

Fig. 5.2 Self-portrait photos used

I used double exposure for this. For the base, I used a picture of a hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia. Inside, I included buildings from Malaysia and Japan (Tokyo) and the Twin Tower. I cut out the background and mixed it together in Photoshop. I wanted the Twin Tower and my picture to extend beyond the frame simultaneously, so I copied and pasted it over the picture.

Further Development

I added a noise to make my poster look like a movie poster.

Inspiration from Daydreaming

This poster expresses inspiration from daydreaming by combining reality and imagination. It presents the history of my life as an international student in Malaysia through the buildings and national flowers of Japan and Malaysia.

Progress in After Effects

I had the idea of animating Twin Tower with an up-and-down movement and having the extra hibiscus turn. But it still looked empty, so I added some videos of moving clouds and circles from

I added typography to state the title at the top of the poster and the noise effect. This makes it look more like an old movie poster.

7. Reflection

This project was a great opportunity to explore the theme of daydreaming and how it intertwines with reality. I enjoyed incorporating various elements from my life as an international student in Malaysia, blending the architecture and national flowers of Japan and Malaysia. The challenge of conveying these themes through animation and graphic design was enriching. Although I faced difficulties with managing the layers and keyframes in the animation process, I learned valuable skills like Photoshop parallax animation and importing Photoshop files into After Effects. Overall, this project allowed me to express myself freely and create something deeply personal, which made it a highly rewarding experience.
