1. RESEARCH

I began the process of creating a poster by seeking references on Pinterest.
While browsing Pinterest, I noticed that an effective poster often features an intriguing catchphrase and a message that is initially hard to grasp.

After research, I aimed to create a message that could resonate universally, without the barriers of geographical or language differences. This idea led me to incorporate both Japanese "kanji" and English into a single poster. The message also alludes to the issue of racial discrimination stemming from linguistic and cultural disparities.

2. CONCEPT

Title: ”平等” Equality - Let’s Unite for Human.

Slogan ideas:
  • “Accept the differences, enjoy them”
  • “What is equality?”
  • “Let's focus on the world”
  • “Don't look away”
  • “Because she's a woman?” - A photo of a woman who seems to have experienced violence
  • “Just because I was born a woman...”-
  • “The time to change has come”
  • “Aren't you distinguishing?”
  • “Everyone is different, and that's good”
  • “Take a courageous step” - A photo of a crowd starting to walk towards a specific location
  • “That step is big.” - Picture of shoes
  • “Everyone is different, everyone is the same” - Photos of various types of cutlery/eggs of various colors
  • "Take his hand, Take her hand"

3. SKETCHES

I decided to try out 2 compositions.

4. PROCESS

Poster #1

Materials: Hands picture, Text(Title, Catchphrase)

First, I cut out only the hand part using quick selection tool in Photoshop.

Adjusted the line spacing of the text in Illustrator. (Select text + Alt + ↑)

In Photoshop, I combined the two and tried two compositions and two different types of fonts.

I wanted to make it simple and easy to understand like a reference, so I thought that fonts that are too thick or cursive and contain many curves do not fit the poster.

Poster #2

Materials: Hands picture, Text(Title, Catchphrase), Suqure objects

Took same step as Poster #1. However, unlike Poster #1, I tried to balance it by placing the kanji side by side. It also intersects with the meaning of parallel and equal that "equality" implies.

To suggest equality, the color of a certain part of the kanji was changed to seemble "=".

5. FINAL OUTCOME

Title: ”平等” Equality - Let’s Unite for Human.

Description:

The title, "Equality - Let's Unite for Human," serves as the theme of a poster design. The central message of this poster revolves around the concept of equality, emphasizing the importance of unity among all humans irrespective of their differences. The poster aims to be more than just an art piece, it serves as a powerful tool for social change. It intends to spread the message of unity and equality, encouraging viewers to move beyond their prejudices and biases. Its purpose is to foster an understanding that we are all part of the human race and should stand united, treating everyone with fairness and respect, and promoting equality at all levels of society.

In the creation of the poster, I incorporated the use of the Japanese "Kanji" character to symbolize the concept of equality. This was a deliberate choice aimed at transcending any possible language barriers, thereby emphasizing that the ideals of unity and collaboration can be universally understood, regardless of linguistic differences. The intention behind this choice was to communicate that unity and collaboration are not limited by language or cultural differences.

5. REFLECTION

Reflecting on this project, I've gained a deeper understanding of the intricate process of type design and poster creation. The necessity to consider even the smallest details, such as the ascender height and baseline, became evident during the task. The challenge of fusing different cultural influences represented through the use of both English and Japanese "Kanji" in a single poster, was a unique experience that expanded my perspective on design. It was inspiring to create a message that resonates universally, highlighting the importance of unity and equality. This project has effectively honed my creativity, making me appreciate the craft of design even more.
